Duncan Delivers at Takapoto

Duncan Delivers at Takapoto
Duncan McFarlane can’t speak highly enough of his Partridge Jewellers Gold Tour opening qualifier winner Be Mine NZPH.

The 10-year-old grey headed home a very competitive 29-strong field to take the honours. Time was tight for the two phase competition and in the end only four were double clear, with five picking up a single time fault and two with two time faults.

Duncan and his grey mare came home in 44.19 seconds with Annabel Francis (Taupo) and La Quinara crossing the flags in 45.38 seconds, Maurice Beatson (Dannevirke) aboard Central Park home in 46.16 and Samantha Van Lierde (Cambridge) aboard Caesar NZPH stopping the clock at 47.28 seconds. Melody Matheson (Havelock North) and Cortaflex Graffiti MH were the fastest of the top six with their 43.19-second effort but had a single time fault in the opening round.

‘She is a very good girl,” said Duncan, who competed in the United States at top level for many years. He’s taken his time with Be Mine NZPH, as he likes to do with all his horses. “We like to let them tell us when they are ready to step up.”

He’s had the horse five years and just this season stepped her up to Grand Prix level. The combination did the Silver Tour at Takapoto last year, finishing with a single rail down in the jump-off.

“She is a really smart mare and quite the over achiever! She almost tries too hard. She is awesome to have around – crazy in the ring but that’s just out of keenness.”

He is chuffed to have the qualification behind him. “I knew the time would be snug so went for just under time. She is quick against the clock and careful. She is a horse who usually gets better as the show progresses.”

Duncan enjoyed the course, saying it had started off a little easy before getting a bit bigger towards the end. “That’s the way to build so we get them jumping.”

Takapoto will be their last show of the season as Duncan’s focus switches to his new silage business – the truck crate comes off and a silage bin will go on with a four-axle silage trailer behind.

“This is the best show to finish a season on!”
