Florence on Fire at Takapoto
As it was, Logan and Florence (pictured) won by .2 of a point. “I was a bit nervous about Jesse going last,” said the 27-year-old Dannevirke farmer. “Florence is a good jumper but her season has been a bit up and down and she has missed a lot of it.”
However, she was very consistent in her four and five-year-old age group classes. The grey mare is by Lord Larino LS and out of Molly, a Double J Repicharge mare who Logan has used for most of his breeding. He has three other siblings to Florence at home who are all looking pretty exciting for the future.
“I really wanted to do well here. We prepped for this show. The surface is great here and if you know (course designer) Greg (Best) you know he will build a bit of a technical course for the young horses.”
He felt it also paid to do some homework on just what the judges would be looking for. He and Florence would now do the Copper Tour later this week.
“It is exciting to come to a longer show like this. While it was disappointing last week was cancelled, there are always positives in it. It is more relaxing for both me and the horses to have a longer show like this. Takapoto is a show I enjoy – it is different to what we usually get in New Zealand, a higher class and just up a level. It is great.”
He is looking forward to “unleashing” his “big” horses later in the week. But for now he’s happy to celebrate his win with Florence.
“Having age group classes judged on style is a nice change – style is what we are training into our horses . . . to be stylish and do the right thing. Being judged on it is a good challenge for us in New Zealand – in Europe it is done all the time.”
