New Combo Snaffle Second Silver Qualifier
Thirty-one started the class with just three combinations coming home clear and inside time over the Gerrit Beker-designed course. First of the clears in the one-round speed class was Georgia Bouzaid (Cambridge) aboard the fiery AP Ninja who came home in 79.16 seconds. Next was 15-year-old Olivia Newsom (Tauranga) aboard Caretino Jewell who upped the ante with her 78.36-second effort. Then came Olivia on the showy Cassera MS who flew home in 77.14 seconds. Filling the minor placings were Philip Steiner (Tauranga) on Cassina Dior who had just a single time fault for fourth with Alexa Randall (Auckland) and Alexa Randall in fifth on two faults and Emma Gaze (Ohaupo) aboard Kowhai Bug the fastest of the four faulters.
Olivia was very pleased with the mare who she is riding for William Willis. “She is great. She tried so hard for me. I feel very lucky to be riding her,” said Olivia.
Cassera MS is the first catch ride for the 19-year-old from Karaka. “It was a bit daunting. Coming into the class the plan was for an efficient clear. The course was lovely and everything came up well for me.”
She was grateful for input from William on how to get the best from the nine-year-old mare and also her trainers Colin and Toni McIntosh. “They have really taught me how to ride a horse this season. They’ve made me feel a lot more confident when I step into the ring. I used to be very nervous but they keep me calm.”
Olivia will start two horses in the Silver Tour Final, having already qualified aboard Yalambi’s Garibaldi.
