Nippy Mare Loves her Speed
Sophie Scott knows only too well how nippy Joop Box can be in a speed class, so it was no surprise to anyone when the Wellington combination flew home to take the honours in the Waipa Home of Champions Copper Tour Qualifier Two.
There was a 3.48 second gap between them and runners-up Maya Hegh (Taupaki) aboard Encore NZPH who were just .55 of a second ahead of third-placed Kate Hewlett (Kerikeri) and Redcliffs Guns and Roses.
Sophie, who rides Joop Box for Sonya Mason says the 15hh mare just loves a good speed class. “She is very nippy,” she said. “She qualified for the Copper Tour Final yesterday so we did go out to give it a good crack. It definitely paid off.”
The mare can be a little sassy sometimes and is not the easiest of rides. “She doesn’t have the best steering wheel or brakes and can be fiery but she is so much fun. She is a lot different to my other big horses, so we like to go out and just enjoy ourselves.”
Eighty-five started the one round speed class. Sophie will continue through to tomorrow’s final with Joop Box and Benrose Casino. She is trained by Jeff McVean and her mother Tania Scott.
“This is my first year competing at Takapoto and just love it,” she said. “It is the best surface and so classy – it is awesome.”
