Personality-Plus Horse Wins Five-Year-Old

Personality-Plus Horse Wins Five-Year-Old
COVID brought a silver lining to the world of Hannah Bodle (pictured). This afternoon she and Haupouri Galileo NZPH cruised to victory in the BTW Five-Year-Old (on style), heading home 27 other combinations to take the honour on eight point score.

If Hannah’s plan had been on track, she would have been back in Limerick, in Ireland working for Kennedy Bros Sport Horses but COVID struck while she was home escaping the winter and she ended up staying in New Zealand.

She called Warwick and Juliet Hansen to inquire about some horses and they ended up offering her “a few to get going” – one of those was Haupouri Galileo NZPH. “I couldn’t turn down an opportunity like that,” says the 23-year-old.

Galileo joined her in September and they have quickly formed a bond. “He is a pretty cool dude and a bit of a stable character – he has an awesome personality and loves his job . . . actually he is a bit of a human.”

Hannah had every confidence in Galileo doing well today. “I thought he had the ability to do well but at the end of the day, he is just five but today he really showed what he has in the tank. All our training is really paying off and he is becoming the horse I knew he could be when I first sat on him.”
While the horse was a little shy when he first joined her stable last year, he has quickly turned into a favourite. “He is a real smooch.”

The combination will compete in the Copper Tour later this week and then head to the five-year-old classes at the Land Rover Horse of the Year Show.

“I am pretty grateful I stayed home as everything has just fallen into place and I am doing what I love.” Hannah starts her day at Chelthenham Stables working with breakers and pre-trainers in the morning before heading home to Morrinsville in the afternoon to work with her own showjumpers.

“I am really grateful to my trainer Lisa Coupe too . . . she brings so much to my team and me.”
